There’s a special kind of DJ who can drop Alice Deejay’s ‘Back in My Life’ without a hint of irony and still make it feel like a forbidden vinyl from a parallel universe. Jossy Mitsu is that DJ. Her Keep Hush set for the ec2a takeover in Bristol is a glorious mess of trance nostalgia, sleazy house, and leftfield electronic detours – the kind of set that makes you question every genre boundary you thought you understood. The room is a dimly lit basement, sweaty walls, a single strobe flickering over a crowd that’s half-rave, half-lecture hall. The BPM hovers around 134 on average, but the energy is almost entirely mid-range (0.58), with the highs and lows kept in check. This suggests a mix that lives in the rhythmic pocket – rolling grooves, vocal hooks, and synth stabs that never quite let the floor rest.

The dominant key of 12A (four tracks) ties everything together harmonically, allowing Mitsu to weave between trance classics and modern experimental edits without clashing. Her mixing is loose but intentional, often dropping tracks in mid-phrase or cutting to a new beat before the previous one has fully decayed. Standout moments abound. The SOPHIE ‘Infatuation’ remix by Lichtbogen is a standout – it takes the original’s hyperpop gloss and turns it into a shimmering, almost dubby house tool. Pantera’s ‘Batucada’ with Dave Nunes brings a Brazilian percussion break that feels like a sun shower in the middle of a humid night. And then there’s Typekast’s ‘Drill Bite’, a seventeen-minute monster that slowly morphs from broken beat into a relentless techno pulse – the kind of track that divides the room but rewards those who stay.

The closing track, Jaques Raupé’s ‘Pippilotta’, is a perfect comedown: Balearic, slightly melancholic, with a guitar riff that sounds like it’s waving goodbye from a distant beach. The set opens with the aforementioned Alice Deejay, a bait-and-switch that could easily be ironic but instead sets a tone of sincere euphoria. The peak arrives around Mousse T.’s ‘Horny ’98’ extended mix – a certified floor-filler that Mitsu deploys with surgical precision. And the closing? That Raupé track, fading into a gentle noise floor. A masterclass in emotional pacing.
