Frequently Asked Questions

What is the mastering signal chain?
Eight stages in sequence: pre-normalization to -14 LUFS, mid/side sub-mono processing, 4-band parametric EQ, feed-forward RMS compressor with sidechain HPF, drive gain, soft or hard clipper, 5ms lookahead limiter, and trim compensation. Each stage runs as 64-bit floating-point for precision.
What LUFS targets do the genre presets use?
Streaming targets -14 LUFS (transparent, no clipping). Rominimal hits -8 LUFS with warm mid emphasis. House targets -7 LUFS with full low-end. Techno pushes to -6 LUFS with hard clipping and tight dynamics. Trance sits at -7 LUFS with airy high-end. DnB is the loudest at -5 LUFS with aggressive compression and fast attack.
What does sub-mono processing do?
It encodes audio into mid/side, applies a high-pass filter to the side channel only (80-150 Hz depending on preset), then decodes back to stereo. Bass frequencies become mono for better club playback and streaming compatibility, while mid and high frequencies keep their full stereo width.
How does the clipper work?
Two modes: polynomial soft-clip (smooth saturation, blends x - x³/3 with a knee parameter) or hard-clip with a configurable smooth knee region. The drive gain pushes the signal into the clipper — higher drive means more harmonic density and perceived loudness before the limiter.
Can I override the preset settings?
Yes. The Advanced Settings panel exposes six controls: EQ Tilt (dark to bright), Compression amount, Clipper Drive, Stereo Width, Target LUFS (-14 to -3), and True Peak Ceiling. These override the preset defaults while keeping the overall signal chain structure.
How are LUFS and true peak measured?
BS.1770-4 compliant measurement with K-weighting filters, 400ms gated blocks, and two-pass relative gating at -10 LU. Before and after metrics show integrated LUFS, sample true peak in dBTP, and loudness range (LRA) so you can compare exactly what changed.
Is my audio uploaded to a server?
No. All processing runs directly on your device in a Web Worker. Your files never leave your machine. On mobile devices with limited processing power, Cloud Assist handles the mastering securely — files are deleted immediately after processing.
