Zokhuma in The Lab Mumbai
Mixmag
Another Mixmag Lab transmission from Mumbai, and we are once again collectively indebted to the anonymous hero who Shazamed the un-Shazamable. Zokhuma’s set is precisely the kind of deep, tracky journey that has us frantically pausing YouTube at the 32-minute mark. The vibe is that of a humid, low-ceilinged box where the only light comes from LED strips and the collective glow of our determination to ID every percussive fill. Technically, this is a masterclass in deep house pressure, averaging a solid 133 BPM and largely orbiting the resonant, bass-friendly key of 12A.
The energy profile is a lesson in patience: the highs are barely a whisper (just 4% of the spectrum), allowing the intricate mid-range and overwhelmingly dominant low-end (over 60%) to build a hypnotic, physical narrative. The mixing is linear and seamless, with subtle harmonic shifts into zones like 3B and 5A to add tension without ever breaking the spell. As for the crate digs, the melancholic roll of Logic1000's 'DJ Logic Please Forgive Me' is a perfect, vulnerable opener. Fantastic Man's 'Sun Express (Emergency Mix)' provides a necessary shot of analogue warmth, while Phoenecia's 'Odd Job (Rhythm Box Version)' is a glitchy, archive-raiding surprise.
The tribal thump of 'Dub City' by Andrea Frisina & Irregular Synth and the driving, melodic rework of Loco Dice's 'Roots' by DJ Tennis are equally vital selections. The journey begins with the soft blips of 'DJ Logic Please Forgive Me', climbs to a peak with the relentless drive of 'Roots (DJ Tennis Remix)', and finally dissolves into the eight-minute, atmospheric dub of Piezo's 'Cala'.
