Mixmag Lab Pune
Shampain’s Mixmag Lab Pune set is for the techno purists who think a kick drum should feel like a physical assault and a hi-hat should slice through the fog. This is no-frills, driving techno with a global bass music edge, a set that rewards stamina and attention to rhythmic detail. The Pune lab becomes a pressure cooker, all function-over-form lighting and relentless forward motion. Technically, this is hard and fast, with a BPM average of 141.5 sitting firmly in peak-time techno territory. The key focus shifts to the more urgent, minor-leaning 7A, with support from 12A and 11B, creating a tense, slightly dissonant harmonic palette that complements the raw energy.
The energy profile is telling: a massive, dominant low-end consumes most of the spectrum, with a relatively subdued mid-range and sharp, punctuating highs. This is mixing as a physical exercise, with long, pounding blends and sudden, impactful drops. Tracks like Rhyw's 'Honey Badger' are given a staggering 19 minutes to evolve and hypnotize. The tracklist is a weaponized selection. Opening with the relentless drive of 'Gerd Elysis Raudenbusch - On the Run' sets an immediate, no-nonsense tone.
Dropping Jeff Mills' 'Alarms' is a tribute to the architect of tension. Anunaku & Dj Plead's 'Clap Clap' and TSVI's 'Hossam' inject vital, syncopated global rhythms into the four-four framework. Kashpitzky's 'I Demand' is a lesson in minimal, maximal impact. The journey is a linear ascent: it begins with mechanistic precision, builds to a chaotic, percussive peak with the clattering intensity of 'Modeselektor & FLOHIO - Wealth', and ends abruptly with the broken, halftime skank of Surusinghe's 'Likshot'.
