Leon Vynehall
Mixmag Lab London
Leon Vynehall has a way of making techno feel deeply human, less like machinery and more like a fever dream in a basement club. His Mixmag Lab London set is a masterful exercise in this very specific alchemy. The vibe is intense and intimate, a dimly lit room where every percussive hit feels physical. Technically, this is a driving, percussive-led techno and house hybrid, maintaining a firm 131.8 BPM average and using the 12A key as a launchpad for forays into darker 3B and melodic 5A territories.
The energy is rooted in a powerful low-end (0.67) but animated by intricate mid-range rhythms (0.26), creating a sound that is both physically punishing and rhythmically sophisticated. The mixing is dynamic and clever, often using stark contrasts to build drama, stitching together raw, functional grooves with moments of unexpected soul. The track selection is impeccable. Opening with the mysterious, rolling funk of Kassem Mosse's 'Untitled A1' sets a high bar.
He then weaves in UK funky pressure with Roska's 'Pree Me', tribal energy with Tribal Brothers' 'Tribal Drums', and a touch of raw, heads-down techno with Andre Crom's 'Rhea'. His own 'Black Dove' provides a haunting, melodic interlude. The inclusion of the andhim remix of Hayden James' 'Foolproof' is a brilliant curveball, injecting pure vocal euphoria into the gritty landscape. The journey is a rugged expedition: it begins in the abstract depths of the Kassem Mosse track, climbs to a peak of hybrid energy with Jurango & Jamaica Mnanda's 'Junglizer', and descends into the long, hypnotic, 11-minute march of DJ Eclipse's 'Walk With Me'.
