Skream & Benga
Boiler Room : Melbourne
Skream & Benga back-to-back in Melbourne—a historic dubstep reunion that had us all frantically typing in our phones, desperate to ID every weighty drop. The vibe is a reverent, heaving mass of bassheads, united by the wobble and the sub-bass hug. With a broad BPM range averaging 143, the set fluidly moves between dubstep's halftime crawl and UK garage's skip, often harmonically pivoting around 12A and 8B. The energy is beautifully balanced (0.45 low, 0.38 mid, 0.17 high), allowing for both cavernous sub-bass excursions and crisp, percussive workouts.
Their chemistry is palpable, blending classic anthems with fresh dubs in a way that feels both nostalgic and vital. The opening salvo, Mala & Magugu's 'Militant Don (Vocal)', is a deep, spiritual dubstep monument. Hamdi & Simula's 'Echo Chamber' is a modern viral hit deployed with devastating effect. Sir Spyro & Killa P's 'Start & Stop' brings a dose of grimey urgency, and the inclusion of Bhupendra Khatana's folk sample shows their playful, genre-oblivious digging.
Their own 'Midnight Control' is a lush, extended finale that nods to their storied past. The journey starts with the meditative pulse of 'Militant Don', peaks with the seismic drop of 'Echo Chamber', and winds down gracefully with the extended mix of 'Midnight Control'.
