Cocoonics
Guangzhou | ANTH Takeover
Cocoonics’ ANTH Takeover from Guangzhou is for the marathon runners, the ones who believe a track isn’t truly explored until it’s passed the ten-minute mark. With only six tracks in the entire set, this is a deep, meditative dive into extended sonic worlds. The vibe is that of a dedicated after-hours loft, where time dilates and the journey is internal as much as it is musical. Technically, this is a patient exploration of progressive house and electronica, maintaining a steady 143.1 BPM core while spending most of its time in the expansive, open key of 12A.
The energy balance leans heavily into the low-end (0.60) and mid-range (0.33), creating a dense, layered tapestry of sound where elements are introduced and retired over vast stretches, allowing for total immersion. Cocoonics’ mixing is essentially about long, evolving blends, letting tracks speak for themselves and overlap for minutes at a time, building a hypnotic, almost trance-like state. The harmonic progression is slow and deliberate, with key changes feeling like monumental shifts in landscape. The curation is bold.
Opening with Soulwax’s ‘All Systems Are Lying’ is a statement of intricate, mechanical funk. The mammoth, 30-minute journey of ‘Cilek - 本田俊仔(Honda handsome guy)’ is the centerpiece, a sprawling epic of Asian-inspired electronica. ‘GT Bytes - Drop Anarchy’ provides a more driving, synth-heavy interlude, and the cheekily listed ‘Workout In the Mix 2011’ segment is a nod to the classic, euphoric trance compilation ethos. The set’s journey is a single, sustained arc: it begins with the intricate rhythms of Soulwax, loses itself completely in the epic narrative of the Cilek track, and uses that as the foundational plateau from which to gently return to reality—a masterclass in the power of duration and depth.
