Keep Hush Live Bristol: Booty Bass Takeover
Bungzo's Booty Bass Takeover in Bristol is a joyous, unapologetic celebration of all things low-slung and rowdy, a welcome antidote to the po-faced seriousness that can plague the underground. The vibe is pure, sweaty fun, a room united in the dumb, brilliant simplicity of a 808 kick and a chanted hook. Riding a party-ready 135 BPM average, the set is harmonically loose but finds a home in the bright, open feel of the 12A key.
The energy is, unsurprisingly, dominated by the low-end (0.56 average), with those iconic booty-shaking basslines doing most of the work while vocal snippets and percussion fills provide the colour. The mixing is quick and punchy, keeping the energy high and the surprises coming. The tracklist is a global tour of ghetto tech and club mutations: Rod Lee's Baltimore classic 'Postman' is the perfect, scene-setting opener, Juliana Mendez's 'No Le Pare' brings fierce guaracha energy, and Kobes' 'Milkshake (Techno Edit)' is the kind of silly-genius flip that defines the genre.
The peak chaos arrives with the polyrhythmic madness of 'Tussilandia Exotic', a track title that says it all. The journey is a non-stop party from the opening call to action, through various global club rhythms, to the ultimate release of DJ Class's timeless 'Tear da Club Up'.
