Awakenings ADE 2018
Rebekah & Paula Temple
It's the Berghain cosplay convention, complete with fresh leather harnesses that still have the price tags on. You've got an army of people in tiny Matrix sunglasses indoors, trying to look intimidating while drinking a bottle of water. They're all very serious about the industrial aesthetic, but deep down they're just having a massive, sweaty cuddle. The brutalist steel structures of the Awakenings ADE 2018 warehouse rattle under the sheer force of the strobe-lit, smoke-filled room. This legendary Rebekah & Paula Temple live set is a masterclass in punishing, high-octane Techno.
Operating at a blistering 139.3 BPM, they mercilessly ride the 3B and 12A keys to sustain an atmosphere of total dread. The energy is overwhelmingly concentrated in the low-end, delivering kick drums that feel like physical blows. Their back-to-back mixing is an aggressive, fast-paced dialogue, layering distortion over distortion. Looking at the Rebekah & Paula Temple Awakenings ADE 2018 tracklist is like reading a manifesto of hard dance. They absolutely terrorize the room with Tommy Holohan's "Inter Dimensional Hardcore Business".
The absolute madness of slipping Mo-Do's "Eins Zwei Polizei" into a brutalist techno set is a stroke of snarky genius. The trajectory here is purely destructive, starting weird and getting darker. They bizarrely kick things off with the opening track "Catching Fire" by KALLY'S Mashup Cast before nose-diving into the abyss. Katsunori Sawa's "Mind Game" provides a face-melting highlight, leading up to an unhinged finale with the closing track, Tiësto's "Adagio for Strings".
