DANILO PLESSOW (MCDE) | The Lab London
Mixmag | AlphaTheta takeover
DANILO PLESSOW (MCDE) in The Lab London for the AlphaTheta takeover, and of course it's a nine-track journey that feels both meticulously curated and wonderfully spontaneous. Because when Motor City Drum Ensemble is at the helm, we expect depth, disco, and digger's delights, and we get it in spades. The lab feels like a secret after-hours spot, dimly lit and thick with the smell of vinyl dust, where every track selection feels like a shared secret. With an average BPM of 126.3 and a foundation in the 12A key, this is a deep, soulful expedition into disco house and leftfield electronics. The BPM range from 120 to 130 allows for a dynamic flow, from languid grooves to more urgent rhythms.
The energy balance—0.37 low, 0.50 mid—is fascinating, highlighting Plessow's focus on rich, melodic mid-range textures, warm basslines, and organic instrumentation over pounding kicks. His mixing is patient and musical, giving epic tracks like Skream's 'Settled (Billy Turner Remix)'—a 21-minute deep house odyssey—the space to fully unfold. The tracklist is a masterclass in eclectic taste. The opener, Gomma's 'Baiana', is a sunny, Brazilian-tinged disco cut that immediately disarms. Zrust dBe's 'Underground Gang' brings a raw, analogue funk edge.
Fade's 'All I Got (Chris Fortier 20yr Dub)' appears again, a testament to its timeless deep house quality. Azymuth's 'Rapa Poeira' is a jazz-fusion masterpiece that adds sophisticated warmth, while Jan van Rock Project's 'Deep Space Night Mix' and Syclops' 'Pink Sarah Nyc Is Back' delve into quirky, psychedelic electronics. It begins with the tropical breeze of 'Baiana', reaches a hypnotic peak during the extended journey of 'Settled', and closes with the soulful, slightly melancholic bump of Starlight's 'You Can't Hide Your Love From Me (Mangoe)', leaving us in a state of contented, musical saturation.
